Investing in AI

The investment outlook for AI over the next five years is generally positive, with continued growth and expansion expected in various sectors of industry. As AI technologies become integrated into various businesses and industries, the demand for AI solutions to enhance efficiency, productivity, and innovation will also continue to grow.

Investments in AI research, development, and applications are likely to increase as organizations recognize the potential benefits of AI in driving competitive advantages while addressing complex challenges. It is important for investors to stay informed about emerging trends, opportunities, and risks in the AI market to make informed investment decisions.

It should be noted that Ai advances are directly tied to computer and computing advances going forward. Computer technology is the mortar, the glue, upon which AI sits. It is how such advances can take place.  Faster processors, faster and more advanced memory, optical computing developments, etc. all drive AI forward in various applications.  It is also true that software and more advanced algorithms also will play a part in pushing AI forward.  But those advances are driven by human research and development going forward.  Many developers are advancing their software and algorithm elements as well.  What was impossible before functionally, can very much be done today.

The point here is that while rules and regulations can be a good thing for protecting the public at large, will some companies or types of AI applications come to be much more regulated than they are now?  Public safety concerns or even long-term effects which might not be fully evident today, will push regulators to consider how the public will come to be impacted over time? The more regulations which come into being, the more that some company’s sales will certainly come to be affected.  It’s an interesting question going forward.

Some companies might come to discover that they will have a much more involved or even complex process to market or sell their products then they had before. So the net effect then is reduced or even a more complex sales process overall.

On principle, people have the right to use, place or invest their own monies into anything that they chose.   However, one could also suggest that there has never been an industry or commercial area ever to come along that has more moral, ethical dilemmas or even challenges facing it as AI does. Investors really need to better understand what the end goals or objectives are or will be, when coming to invest in an AI company or development project.

So as these newly evolving regulatory groups or organizations, such as the UN, come along, what may be an application or use of AI  today with no oversight or licensing of any kind, could come to be highly regulated in the future.

Aside from the rush of applications and deployments within the private sector, of which there are many, the reality is that there are clearly numerous developments and deployments of AI which are currently going on inside of  the military industrial complex which have already happened or are happening now.

The military have already dedicated huge amounts of money and resources into furthering their AI developments.  They are clearly working to push AI or some variant thereof, which will be used and dedicated to making the elimination of people faster or more efficient. Amongst those you can include:

The above examples of applications are but a small smattering of the potential uses for AI within the military arena. We, the public, can fully expect that there are applications and uses for AI which we will never even come to know about or understand.  Information about  most of those applications will be guarded as national secrets.

There is a plethora of civilian companies, private and publicly held who will be promoting new AI developments as well.  Their goals and objectives will likely be more open if not transparent. But none the less, they too will be marching on as well.  The question then becomes one of what, if any or if ever, will their developments ever come to be under any kind of new review or regulation?  What today is a free-for-all in AI development could later turn out to be one highly regulated or even licensed industry.  AI companies, for example, who are providing AI avatars or companions will see much more intense review.  Will they come to be much more regulated going forward?  As the use of AI becomes much more scrutinized, some companies may come to find themselves facing new requirements or even new regulations which today do not even exist yet.  Having an AI application in which the application today might be considered benign is one thing. But as more and more AI applications get released into the world, some companies will come to find themselves in an area or AI application which would likely come to have much deeper or serious consequences than previously thought.

Investing in AI has serious nuances and ethical considerations which most other investments do not have to consider. Every investor looks to maximize the returns on the investment they make of course. But what might be evident or obvious on the surface is, does the investment come with any entanglements morally or ethically?  Something which might not be obvious or evident at first glance. So aside from an investor wanting to make strong, profitable, if not even ethical investments, there seems to be an opportunity to have a fund created which deals with all the issues and concerns surrounding AI so that an investor can feel confident that both their financial concerns and their ethical concerns are met collectively.  “Advanced Investing on Artificial Intelligence”  AI-AI.

And lasty, when considering an investment in AI, on needs to be aware that as the regulations or regulatory bodies make their pronouncements, several AI companies will come to face a body of stiffer requirement going forward.  Rules, regulations and oversight will come to be restrictive. Those same new rules will come to limit a company’s sales or profitability.  The wide open and free unregulated market will come to more restrictive over time.  Something an investor should be cognitive of before parting with their money.
