Nvidia vs Huawei – AI Chip Wars

Much to the surprise to Apple, Samsung and several other tech companies, Huawei released the world’s first triple folding smart phone,  the Mate XT Ultimate. A user can use the device as a regular smart one, one section or expand the phone to all three sections, giving the user the experience of a tab. It is quite the device, no doubt. The Mate XT is using an advanced Huawei processor, the new Ascend 910C which is seriously competing against the Nvidia’s H100 GPU. Nvidia is seriously being challenged in AI GPU space. While Huawei has its work cut out for its which challenges with supply chain and American sanction, the technology itself is incredibly good.

While I personally am not a fan of sanctions themselves. Recent experience has shown that sanctions and limitations and come back to bite the sanctioning party seriously in the butt. All one must do, is look at what happened to Russia during the avalanche of sanctions against it. They sold more oil and had more exports than then ever had before in their history. Uncle Sam thought that it would hurt them, but nothing was further from the truth. It blew up in America’s face.

So while Nvidia may see reduced sales of their top chip, the fact is that the American sanctions have only spurred the Chinese to aggressively do their own thing. (Can wait to get a Mate XT myself and what YouTube on it!!  Now that will be fun.)

One wonders if Nvidia has an answer for the new processor,  but we will see. As I like to point out, advanced processor or not, calling it AI or not, we are still crawling along, still hoping to get to real AI – besides the name or just using a label.  We will see. Wordsmithing will not give us real AI, but you already knew that, if you have been reading our posts.

Meanwhile, the hammer is yet to fall on all the expected rul. and regulations concerning AI. Those hurdles will arrive, eventually. Some companies will be prepared, some will not. Suffice to say, the AI market is competitive to say the least. It will be interesting to see who the winners and losers will be. Stay tuned
